A lawn can exist with very little help from the soil, but if you want an enviable patch of green you really need to stock the pantry for your grass. The term “feeding the lawn” is actually a bit of a misnomer; when you fertilize you’re just giving the soil nutrients that the individual grass plants need to perform photosynthesis. As most of us learned in elementary school, that’s the process through which individual leaves of grass use the sun’s energy to convert water and carbon dioxide into sugars the plant uses to grow. In other words, it feeds itself. Just the same, it’s as if you were feeding the lawn because the grass needs the nutrients the soil contains to survive.
At Atlanta Lawn Care Services, Inc., we give the grass just the right amount and right balance of nutrients at just the right time to help it grow as consistently perfect as possible. We provide the basic understanding of the nutrients the grass needs and how it uses them.
Testing your soil for deficiencies in macronutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorous, and potassium are the big three, but certainly not the only components of fertilizer. Nor are they the only vitamins the lawn hungers for. They are just the nutrients it uses in the largest amounts.
Any lawn also relies on a steady supply of smaller amounts of secondary nutrients and various micronutrients. Each plays a lesser or greater role in lawn health. But the best protection for any lawn is the right balance of nutrients, almost as important as the amounts of each.
The form the fertilizer takes will affect how readily available it is to the grass roots, as well as how long it persists in the soil. The two basic forms are liquid and dry. Both can supply the nutrients your grass needs but liquid fertilizer is generally more quick-acting and easier to prepare. It doesn’t last as long as granular types do. It also takes a bit of skill to apply liquid fertilizer evenly. That’s one of the reasons the majority of our customers prefer dry fertilizer for regular lawn feedings.
Atlanta Lawn Care Services, Inc. will provide you your East Atlanta lawn soil test and give you an exact idea of just how much of each nutrient you want to feed your lawn, and what form you want those nutrients to take.
